My Relationship to Social Media
I use social media on a personal and professional level. When I was 16 years old, Musically rebranded and turned into TikTok. The newly rebranded app took a leaf out of vine's book and turned what was once a lip-syncing app into a platform for posting all sorts of short-form videos, from comedy to cooking tutorials. I had previously used Musically, and when the rebrand to TikTok happened, I began using the app religiously. I posted multiple videos a day and enjoyed the fast-paced app with more personalized algorithms. It was not long after I started making videos on the app that I had my first video go viral. I continued to post videos and used the algorithm and trends to gain 200,000 followers. Then, I expanded my social presence and began making YouTube videos.
As I transitioned from high school to college, I knew I wanted to do something with social media as a career, but I didn't want it to be necessarily my own life that was being posted anymore. I was passionate about creating video content and managing social media platforms, but I didn't want to sacrifice my own privacy to do so. I learned about social media management as a career and shifted my focus to doing that. I began managing my sorority Sigma Phi Lambdas' social media and increased engagement significantly. While I was doing this, I started working for the Texas A&M Office of Sustainability, managing all of their social media presence. More specifically, I would use Adobe or Canva software to create graphics for the Office, and then I would schedule the graphics and captions into Hootsuite for them to be posted later on our Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, or Twitter. Another thing I did for the Office of Sustainability was developed their brand guide. This 30-page resource helps anyone making content for the Office understand our vision from fonts, colors, and overall design. Another thing I do for the Office of Sustainability is manage influencer relations. We utilize influencers for some of our campaigns to make content and attend events. Some past influencers we have worked with are Jase Powell, Texas A&M TikTok Influencer, Reveille Texas A&M University mascot, and Shelbizlee youtube and Instagram Sustainability influencer. I have also helped create the Marketing plans and do Event Coordination for our Office of Sustainability campus events which include deciding whom we will work with for different events and where we will promote our event as well as how we will promote our event. To promote these events, I will usually run a giveaway on our social media.
Another role I began in social media was as a Social Media Assistant for Impact Group Marketing. At Impact Group Marketing, I managed the social media account for 12 different clients. My job when managing these accounts was to create multiple feed posts, reels, and story posts for each client every day. I had all sorts of clients at Impact one was CURATE, an NFT app popular in the UK. Another was Integrity Urgent Care, a urgent care in Texas. One of my favorite social media accounts I managed at Impact Group Marketing was Pitt Stop detailing services because I was able to make promotional reels put to music with super high-quality car detailing clips. All these experiences have helped me gain immense knowledge and understanding of social media. I view my relationship with social media as a very positive thing because it has helped shape my passions into what they are today.
